I picked up a little too much extra beer weight this off season, so I asked my good friend and amateur racer Josh Kush to try the Pearl Izumi PRO Escape Jersey ($140) and Bibs ($170) and give me his thoughts.
We both loved the colors and design of the kit, as well as the suppleness of the fabric. The jersey was a bit heavy, although the vent placement allowed Josh to stay cool as the temperatures rose during our early April rides with highs in the low 80’s. On exceptionally hot days, it may be best to go for jersey made of a lighter fabric. Pocket placement and size allows for multiple items on long rides, along with small accessory pockets for items such as a credit card or ID.
Like the rest of Pearl Izumi’s PRO line, the jersey and bibs are cut with more of a race fit. That said, the medium jersey’s not quite as snug as race-cut jerseys from Champion System or Castelli. Josh noticed it was slightly loose in the upper chest, but didn’t feel that it hindered his riding at all. The bibs were the highlight of the kit for Josh, as he raved about the compression and comfort the shorts provided. The chamois got high marks as well, offering exceptional comfort, especially for rides longer than three hours.
